Morrissey takes swipe at Oasis in new song about Manchester Arena bombing

Morrissey takes swipe at Oasis in new song about Manchester Arena bombing.

“The silly people sing โ€˜Donโ€™t Look Back in Anger” the ex-Smiths frontman croons.

After 22 wereย killedย in a suicide bombing at a 2017 Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, Oasisโ€™ 1995 classic โ€œDonโ€™t Look Back in Angerโ€ resurged as an anthem of sorts for the bandโ€™s grief-stricken hometown.

Now Morrisseyย appears to mock the Gallaghers with a new song called โ€œBonfire of Teenagersโ€.

Morrissey debuted the track last week in the midst of hisย Las Vegas residency, telling the crowd:

โ€œThis song is new, itโ€™s about Englandโ€™s 9/11โ€ฆ Obviously in jolly old England, most people wonโ€™t talk about it โ€” but I will.โ€

The songโ€™s protagonist is a female fan attending Grandeโ€™s concert, who he describes as being โ€œvaporizedโ€:

โ€œOh, you shouldโ€™ve seen her leave for the arena/ On the way, she turned and waved and smiled: โ€˜Goodbye,’โ€ Morrissey sings in his trademark baritone.

You might recall that Liam Gallagher himself performed โ€œDonโ€™t Look Back in Angerโ€ at One Love Manchester.

Later on in โ€œBonfire of Teenagersโ€ Moz directly references the single with some not-so-subtle contempt:

โ€œAnd the silly people sing โ€˜Donโ€™t Look Back in Angerโ€™/ And the morons sing and sway: โ€˜Donโ€™t Look Back in Angerโ€™/ I can assure you I will look back in anger โ€™till the day I die.โ€

Plenty of fans took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the often-outspoken singerโ€™s latest tune:

โ€œMorrissey expresses anger at the many innocent lives lost and even that is twisted and criticised by someโ€

“Iโ€™m more perplexed by those who DONโ€™T understand his feelings on this.โ€

Another responded:

โ€œI feel the issue here is calling the people of Manchester โ€˜sillyโ€™ and โ€˜moronsโ€™ when they were grieving.โ€

No matter what you think of the polarizing lyrics in โ€œBonfire of Teenagers,โ€ thereโ€™s one thing we can all agree on: Morrissey will always say whatโ€™s on his mind, for better or for worse. Watch fan-captured footage of him performing the song below.
