Morrissey takes swipe at Oasis in new song about Manchester Arena bombing.
“The silly people sing โDonโt Look Back in Anger” the ex-Smiths frontman croons.
After 22 wereย killedย in a suicide bombing at a 2017 Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, Oasisโ 1995 classic โDonโt Look Back in Angerโ resurged as an anthem of sorts for the bandโs grief-stricken hometown.
Now Morrisseyย appears to mock the Gallaghers with a new song called โBonfire of Teenagersโ.
Morrissey debuted the track last week in the midst of hisย Las Vegas residency, telling the crowd:
โThis song is new, itโs about Englandโs 9/11โฆ Obviously in jolly old England, most people wonโt talk about it โ but I will.โ
The songโs protagonist is a female fan attending Grandeโs concert, who he describes as being โvaporizedโ:
โOh, you shouldโve seen her leave for the arena/ On the way, she turned and waved and smiled: โGoodbye,’โ Morrissey sings in his trademark baritone.
You might recall that Liam Gallagher himself performed โDonโt Look Back in Angerโ at One Love Manchester.
Later on in โBonfire of Teenagersโ Moz directly references the single with some not-so-subtle contempt:
โAnd the silly people sing โDonโt Look Back in Angerโ/ And the morons sing and sway: โDonโt Look Back in Angerโ/ I can assure you I will look back in anger โtill the day I die.โ
Plenty of fans took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the often-outspoken singerโs latest tune:
โMorrissey expresses anger at the many innocent lives lost and even that is twisted and criticised by someโ
“Iโm more perplexed by those who DONโT understand his feelings on this.โ
Another responded:
โI feel the issue here is calling the people of Manchester โsillyโ and โmoronsโ when they were grieving.โ
No matter what you think of the polarizing lyrics in โBonfire of Teenagers,โ thereโs one thing we can all agree on: Morrissey will always say whatโs on his mind, for better or for worse. Watch fan-captured footage of him performing the song below.
